Bealtaine, The Fire of Becoming

Bealtaine marks the beginning of summer in the Celtic wheel of the year. It arrives around the 1st of May, sitting opposite Samhain, and signals a time when life moves fully into expression, growth, and outward expansion.

This is a fire festival. A threshold in summer. A turning point where the energy of spring, which has been quietly building beneath the surface, begins to fully emerge into the world.

The Meaning of Bealtaine

The word Bealtaine is often associated with “mouth of the fire” or another interpretation is“bright fire” with a deep connection to the ancient tradition of lighting bonfires to honour fertility, protection, and the growing strength of the sun.

In Ireland, the Bealtaine fire was first lit on the hill of Uisneach, Ireland sacred center also known as the 5th provence, once the surrounding communities saw the fire on the hill being lit, they would then light all the other fires around the country.

Bealtaine reminds us that we start from our sacred center and spiral the magic outwards.

A Time of Emergence

If Imbolc is the whisper of what might come, and the Spring Equinox brings balance and equal light, then Bealtaine is the moment of “yes.”

Things begin to take shape.

Ideas, projects, relationships, and inner shifts start to move from potential into form. This is the season of visibility. Of allowing yourself to be seen. Of trusting what is growing within you enough to let it be expressed outwardly.

Bealtaine in the Modern World

We live in a world that often pushes constant productivity, but Bealtaine is not about force. It is about natural expansion.

It asks us……What is ready to be expressed through you? Where are you holding back from being seen? What would it feel like to trust your own inner fire? This is not about becoming something new, but about allowing what is already within you to emerge fully.

Working with Bealtaine Energy

You don’t need ancient rituals to connect with Bealtaine, although ritual can be powerful. You simply need awareness.

Some ways to align with this energy:

  • Spend time outdoors and notice what is growing in nature

  • Light a candle with intention, symbolising your inner fire

  • Reflect on what is ready to come into form in your life

  • Move your body in a way that feels expressive, not controlled

  • Allow yourself to be seen, even in small ways

This is also a powerful time for creative projects, new beginnings, and stepping into leadership in your own way, however that looks for you.

The Energy of Goddess Anú

At this point in the year, the energy of Goddess Anú feels especially present.

Anú, often recognised as a mother goddess of the land, is deeply connected to fertility, nourishment, and the sovereignty of nature itself. She is not a distant figure, but something that can be felt in the richness of ,the fullness of growth, and the quiet strength that supports life as it rises.

At Bealtaine, her energy shifts from holding and nurturing potential into encouraging expression. There is a sense of being supported as you step forward, as if the land itself is saying, “you are safe to grow, you are safe to be seen.”

Working with Anú at this time can feel like reconnecting to a deeper trust, trusting your body, your timing, and what is naturally unfolding through you without force.

Anú Rising Together

Bealtaine is a time to gather. To be witnessed. To honour what is emerging, not just individually, but as a community.

This Sunday, I’ll be hosting an Anú Rising Bealtaine Celebration Circle from 10am - 12pm in our usual space.

This circle is inspired by Celtic tradition, woven together with gentle yoga, reflection, and space to connect back to yourself and the rhythm of the season.

Our focus will be on building confidence in what is emerging in your life, whether that’s in your work, your creativity, or something more personal that is asking to be seen.

It’s a donation-based event, and you’re very welcome to join, whether it’s your first time or you’ve sat in circle before.

Come as you are, and meet yourself in this moment of becoming.
